Meditation has become trendy. It’s de rigueur don’t you know! The new in thing like the latest dating app or apple gadget and if you don’t do it, you may well be met with cries of..
‘Oh but darling, you really must try it’.
Meditation is hip, but is that any reason to do it? Absolutely not. If you’re going to do it, you should do it to love it and sod what anyone else thinks because meditation is a deeply personal practice.
From a health point of view, it decreases your blood pressure, heart rate, cortisol levels AND increases your serotonin levels (responsible for happy stuff).
From a spiritual point of view, it’s the perfect state to be in.
Meditation is not a tool to prevent thought, but a practice to bring order and calm around the noise and jumble that builds up in our minds. If we can achieve this, we can free ourselves from negativity & doubt and lead a mindful life with renewed energy, balance and freedom.
The problem is, it can be quite difficult to get into when you first start and you have no idea what you’re supposed to be doing!
So here’s my top tips to help get you started.
- Start with guided meditations to help you get used to it before you wander off on your own.
- Use a heavy (ish) blanket as the pressure has been shown to help ground your body and help you reach that meditative state.
- Focus on a flame. If you have an open fire great – if not try a candle. When focussing on a flame, it’s very difficult to think of anything at all
I really hope this helps as meditation is a beautiful thing and the world would be a much kinder place if everyone practiced it.
